Surah al-Fatihah (The Opening)

This chapter comprises seven verses and is traditionally understood to be both 'Makki' and 'Madani,' indicating that it was revealed in both Makkah and Madinah.

According to the commentary in Majma’ul Bayan, it is narrated that the Holy Prophet (S) stated that reciting this Surah grants the reward equivalent to reciting two-thirds of the entire Qur’an, as well as the reward comparable to giving charity to all believing men and women across the world.

An account from a companion of the Holy Prophet (S) recounts that he once recited this Surah in the Prophet's presence. The Prophet declared, “By Him in whose hand is my soul, a revelation similar to this has not been included in the Torah, the Bible, the Psalms, or even in the Qur’an itself.”

Furthermore, the Prophet (S) asked Jabir ibn Abdallah Ansari whether he would like him to teach a Surah unrivaled in the entire Qur’an. Jabir eagerly agreed, expressing his readiness and reverence. The Prophet (S) then taught him Surah al-Fatihah and added, “Should I tell you something about this Surah?” When Jabir expressed his interest, the Prophet responded, “It (Surah al-Fatihah) is a cure for every ailment except death.”

Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) remarked that if one cannot be cured by Surah al-Fatihah, then no cure exists for them. It is also narrated that reciting this Surah seventy times upon painful parts of the body will surely alleviate the pain. Its potency is so revered that it is said if someone recites it seventy times over a deceased individual, there might be a possibility of revival.

Surah al-Fatihah serves as both physical and spiritual healing. It holds an essential place in daily prayers; without it, prayers are considered incomplete. This revered chapter is regarded as a precious gift from Allah (S.w.T.) granted through the Holy Prophet (S), unparalleled by any previous revelation. It is also known as 'Ummul Kitab' (Mother of the Book) and 'Sab’a Mathani' (The Seven Oft-Repeated)."
